This study presents a simple and scalable method to measure plantar pressure and shear stress simultaneously using conventional piezoresistive sensors. Most insole sensors detect only normal pressure, leaving shear stress, which is critical for assessing postural imbalance and movement dynamics, largely unmeasured. Each sensor module consists of one sensor oriented parallel to the insole surface and four tilted at 45° in the forward, backward, left, and right directions, fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate, held at their angles with polyethylene terephthalate film fixtures, and encapsulated with UV-curable resin.

Vertical and shear compression tests characterized the orientation-dependent sensor responses, and finite element analysis verified the sensors' positional and orientational changes during compression. By analyzing the differential signals from the five sensors, the magnitude and direction of shear stress were inferred. Four modules embedded in an insole were tested during treadmill walking and running, demonstrating real-time detection of both plantar pressure and shear stress, with potential applications in gait analysis, athletic-performance monitoring, injury risk assessment, and rehabilitation.
