This study investigated whether modulating the proximal and distal cable anchor-point locations of a cable-driven hip exosuit can systematically alter the distribution of hip assistive torque across anatomical planes. Most studies focus on single-plane assistance, even though hip mechanics are inherently multiplanar. The researchers proposed a geometric model with empirically identified correction terms to estimate three-dimensional torque, and evaluated it on a hip–thigh phantom across 12 anchor configurations and 17 joint-angle conditions (204 cases).

Anchor-point modulation systematically redistributed assistive torque among the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes, producing distinct multiplanar torque profiles. The model captured the major trends and directions of the torque, with the strongest agreement for the Mz component (mean absolute percentage error of 4.7% to 10.1%). Errors increased under greater cable wrap, reflecting torsion and compliance effects not represented in the model. These findings establish anchor-point modulation as a practical method for multiplanar hip assistance and provide an empirical baseline for future work.
