This study was conducted to examine whether a passive hip exosuit could reduce the burden that a walking boot commonly worn during ankle injury recovery places on walking energy expenditure and gait patterns. The researchers recruited 12 healthy adults and asked them to wear a walking boot to simulate the recovery phase of an ankle injury. Under this condition, they evaluated the assistive effects of a passive hip exosuit.

The experiment included several walking conditions, including walking without the exosuit, walking with the exosuit before training, enforced exploration walking training, and walking with the exosuit after training. The passive hip exosuit used in the study was designed to store elastic energy during hip extension and release it during hip flexion, thereby assisting the forward movement of the leg.

The results showed that, after enforced exploration walking training, wearing the exosuit reduced the metabolic cost of walking by approximately 6.2% compared with the pre-training condition. In addition, compared with the no-exosuit condition, the post-training exosuit condition showed an approximately 3.5% reduction in metabolic cost. These findings suggest that the benefit of the exosuit does not come simply from wearing the device, but becomes more apparent when users learn how to take advantage of its assistance through gait training.

After training, participants adjusted their gait in different ways, including changes in step length, step frequency, and step width. This can be interpreted as a process in which each participant explored and found a more efficient walking strategy while wearing both the walking boot and the exosuit. The researchers concluded that a passive hip exosuit combined with enforced exploration walking training may help reduce the physical burden caused by wearing a walking boot and may have potential applications in sports rehabilitation and gait recovery for individuals with ankle injuries.
